Police have identified the suspect in a fatal murder-suicide that occurred earlier this week outside the Aveda Institute South Florida in Davie.
According to Davie Police, 25-year-old Jose Orpi was responsible for the shooting, which took place Tuesday in the parking lot of the beauty school. Investigators say Orpi shot and killed his former girlfriend before taking his own life.
Family members identified the victim as 20-year-old Aileen Martinez of North Miami. Martinez was a cosmetology student at the Aveda Institute and had also been studying music at a Miami-based music school for the past four years. She frequently performed with local bands and was described by loved ones as passionate and creative.
Police said Orpi and Martinez had previously been in a relationship. Investigators determined that Martinez was shot while inside a vehicle parked in the Aveda Institute lot. Orpi later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.
The incident prompted a large police response, with a portion of University Drive temporarily closed and nearby schools placed on lockdown as a precaution while officers secured the scene.
Martinez is survived by her parents, a brother, and a sister. Family members said funeral and burial arrangements are currently being made.
